About the SAA

Somali Action Alliance’s mission is to educate Somalis in the United States on civic engagement, civil rights, responsibilities and full participation of democracy.

The Alliance brings together Somali individuals and organizations who share common interests in building better constituencies, understanding public policy and expanding civic engagement among members of this immigrant community.

The Somali population is estimated over 70,000 in Minnesota. SAA is an anchor advocacy organization of social and racial justice for the Somalis in Minnesota and in  other cities in the country that have large concentration of the immigrant community, including Columbus-Ohio, Seattle-Washington, Lewiston-Maine and San Diego-California.

The goal of the Somali Action Alliance is racial and economic justice for Somali immigrants in all arenas; Our strategies for achieving its goals are:-

  • Alliance Building: Somali Action Alliance has created a strong network of community leaders, organizations and institutional partners to achieve social change and equity on issues that marginalize immigrant minorities and affect their quality of life.
  • Education: Somali Action Alliance provides civic participation and education of local Somali and East African immigrants.
  • Community Organizing: The Alliance convenes and engages the community, providing opportunities for Somalis to address their challenges and barriers. Somali Action Alliance continues to be the chosen voice for Somalis in organizing and mobilizing the local community around crucial social and racial justice issues.
  • Leadership Development and Training: We utilize and promote the leadership skills of ordinary people from every segment of the Somali community and leverage the combined social capital to advocate for equal and fair treatment for all immigrants and refugees.
